On 8 May, residents of Gaya staged protests for several hours, demanding swift justice for the victim. This was followed by a shutdown brought by the state BJP on 9 May. They chanted slogans against Nitish Kumar. BJP leader, Prem Kumar, demanded an apology from the Bihar Chief Minister.

There should be a speedy trial now in a time-bound manner and he must be punished. This is government’s failure that there was a delay in Rocky’s arrest. Nitishji (Nitish Kumar, Bihar Chief Minister) should apologise to people for bringing such people in politics.
Prem Kumar, BJP Leader

This comment by Prem Kumar came a day after Nitish Kumar accused BJP of trying to “exploit” the situation politically.

Nitish Kumar strongly condemned the incident and asserted that nobody could escape from the “long arms of law”. Opposition BJP, on the other hand, claimed that “jungle raj” had returned to the state.
