Two Sri Lankan courts on Monday ordered the release of 40 fishermen arrested by the island nation’s navy for allegedly fishing in their territory in June.

While 14 of them belonged to Rameswaram, the rest were from Nagapattinam and Karaikal, Fishermen Association President S Emiret and Secretary N J Bose said.

All the 40 fishermen have been released by the respective Judicial Magistrates in Sri Lanka, the two association members said.

On August 3, Pakistan had released 163 Indian fishermen captured by them.
