An indefinite curfew was clamped in a Nepal town bordering India on Monday after clashes erupted between security personnel and Madhesi groups. They were taking forward the agitation against the proposed new Constitution.

The cadres of Joint Madhesi Front were protesting the federal model proposed by the country’s political parties. Two police posts in the Birgunj municipality bordering Bihar’s Raxaul town were set on fire by the same cadres.

In the recent weeks, Nepal has seen several violent protests against the new draft Constitution. This particular unrest claimed 11 lives including seven police officers and a two-year-old.

The drafting process has been halted due to protests launched by Madhesis in southern Nepal. The tharu community in western Nepal has also been protesting the proposed seven-province model of the federal structure to be incorporated in the new Constitution.
