Clashes broke out in Jammu and Kashmir between security forces and sympathisers of the mastermind behind the August attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) envoy in Udhampur, Abu Qasim.

Thousands gathered in Kulgam to mourn the Lashkar-e-Taiba leader’s death.

The mastermind behind Udhampur attack in August, Abu Qasim was killed by the Indian Army in Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Giving details of the encounter, Gillani said police along with the Army cordoned off the village on Thursday night on the basis of specific information about Qasim’s presence in the region.

At around 2am, Qasim tried to break the cordon and flee by throwing grenades and firing at security forces, the IGP said, adding in the retaliatory action, he was killed.

The operation was called off at 12.30pm on Friday after security forces properly conducted searches in the area.
