Policeman on Duty at Jayalalithaa’s Memorial Shoots Himself

A 28-year old policeman posted on duty at the memorial of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in Chennai allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself on 4 March 2018, police said.

M Arunraj (28), a native of Madurai and attached to the armed reserve, allegedly took the extreme step early in the morning by shooting himself in his neck using his .303 service rifle, added the police.

He died on the spot.

According to a report in The Hindu, there were four constables on duty at the time, all of whom were at each corner of the memorial.

Around 4:55 am, the other constables heard the sound of a gunfire. Upon checking, they found Arunraj in a pool of blood and discovered that he had shot himself on his neck.

The Indian Express also added that he was taken to the Royapettah government hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

A senior police official said the cause of the incident was being probed into.

According to news reports, the city Police Commissioner also visited the spot later.
