The Bombay High Court has stayed the BMC’s ban on slaughter and sale of meat on September 17.

The Bombay Municipal Corporation had prohibited slaughter and sale of meat in Mumbai on September 10, 13, 17 and 18 on the occasion of the Jain festival Paryushan.

Reacting to the ban, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena workers took to the streets and sold meat in the Agar Bazar region of Dadar in Bombay on September 10, Thursday.

On Friday, the court had stayed the ban on the September 13 and 18 after the Bombay Mutton Dealers’ Association moved court, calling the BMC’s decision unconstitutional.

Arguments went on for the whole day. As far as the ban on 17th (September) is concerned, arguments have been made and the court has reserved orders. We have pressed that the ban on sale should be withdrawn.

The court order has effectively nullified the four-day meat ban in Bombay.
