WHAT HAPPENED?
In a video that went viral, an old woman can be seen buried in the ground up to her neck, evidently begging those who had put her in there to bring her out. According to Hindustan Times, her grandson and his family members had buried her.
WHO IS THE WOMAN?
The woman has been identified as Amlesh Devi, reported HT. She is a widow in her 60s, residing in Samadhpura village in Bihar, who also lost her son.
According to HT, the villagers informed the media that the woman was mentally unstable and would often wander off on her own without informing her family members.
WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
As of now, two versions about why and how this happened have been supplied by those involved in this matter.
THEORY 1
The video is an old one, which was shot when the woman’s husband was still alive, said the village Mukhiya is his defence of the grandson and his family, HT reported. The Mukhiya alleges that the video had only been released now by her cousins due to some land rivalry.
THEORY 2
Rohit Kumar Singh, a human rights activist, claimed that some people from the neighbourhood had provoked the woman's family to do this, in order to control her "waywardness," reported HT.
THEORY 3
The video is recent, having been shot on 4 October, as claimed by the station house police officer of Baheri police station, under which the village falls.
HOW ARE AUTHORITIES REACTING?
The station house officer at Baheri police station said that it’s not a serious matter, that the video was posted on social media on 4 October, and that the woman was “mentally unstable”, reported HT.
