Thirty-year-old Chandrashekhar, leader of the Bhim Army and the main accused in the recent Saharanpur violence in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested by the state’s Special Task Force.

He was arrested from Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh, only a few days after the UP Police declared a reward of Rs 12,000 for information relating to his capture.

Internet services in Saharanpur have been suspended for two days to prevent any unrest after his arrest.

On 9 May, the Bhim Army called for Dalits from across the district to assemble for a mahapanchayat. When police denied permission for the gathering, clashes erupted between the cops and Dalit protesters in ten different localities of Saharanpur, following which Chandrashekhar was booked by police.
