A Delhi court on Thursday remanded five people who were arrested in an espionage case, including a BSF constable, to 14-days judicial custody.

Those sent to judicial custody by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal were,

  • Abdul Rasheed, Border Security Force (BSF) head constable
  • Munawwar Ahmad Mir, retired army havaldar
  • Sabar, government school teacher
  • Fareed Ahmed, army soldier
  • Kafaitullah Khan alias Master Raja, library assistant

The five were earlier presented before the court on the expiry of their police custody. They were arrested in connection to the alleged supply of secret Indian documents to an operative of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The Delhi Police told the court that the accused were not required for further custodial interrogation.

Ahmed was arrested from West Bengal while Mir and Sabar were arrested by a joint team of Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Forty-four-year-old Kafaitullah Khan, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, was allegedly working for the ISI.

He was arrested from New Delhi Railway Station on November 26 while Rasheed was held in Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir. Police sources in Jammu said Kafaitullah’s interrogation led to the arrest of Rasheed.

On Friday, a Delhi Police crime branch team arrested Mir from Rajouri on the charge of involvement in the espionage. According to Delhi Police, Sabar helped Kafaitullah Khan establish contact with Mir.

“Mir took retirement in 2011 after serving with a Rashtriya Rifles (Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry) battalion,” police said.
