A tsunami warning was issued after an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Kumamoto-shi region in Japan on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Tremors were felt a day after a series of earthquakes killed at least nine people and injured nearly 1,000 people in Southwest Japan.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a tsunami up to 3 feet along the coast, east of the epicenter in Kumamoto.
Strong aftershocks continued around Kumamoto on Friday, the morning after it was hit by the initial 6.0 magnitude quake.
The magnitude was much lower than that of the 11 March 2011 quake that touched off a massive tsunami and nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima.
