Media reports state, that a Taliban spokesperson, when contacted, said that a statement will be issued shortly.

Top Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar has died. BBC reports that the Afghan government and intelligence sources have made the claims but the organisation has not responded.

BBC also reports that, when contacted, a Taliban spokesperson said that the extremist group will soon put out a statement.

Al Jazeera English reports that the sources said that he has been dead for two or three years now. The news of his death has been reported several times in the past as well.

Meanwhile, Asadullah Khalid who had served as the Head of National Directorate of Security of Afghanistan reacted on Twitter to BBC’s news break.

An Afghan government official said on Wednesday that a press conference had been called on the subject. The official, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to give statements, did not provide further details.
