Panic prevailed briefly at the famous Saibaba shrine in Shirdi on Thursday after a bullet got accidentally fired from the rifle of a police personnel on duty.

Nobody was injured in the incident which occurred at gate number 2 when constable Nakul Falke was handing over his weapon to his colleague after his duty got over.

Prima facie, the incident happened when trigger of the rifle got pulled accidentally while it was being handed over. We have seized the weapon and will take action against the guilty after conducting inquiry. Nobody sustained injury in the incident.

Saibaba Trust deputy executive officer Appasaheb Shinde said:

The police personnel on duty at this famous shrine should be given proper training in handling of arms so that such incidents do not recur.

The temple is visited by a large number of devotees from across the country and tight security is maintained.
