Some Pre-University (PU) Colleges in Bengaluru have set a higher cut-off for girls when compared to that for boys this admission season.

For instance, in Christ PU College, the cutoff for the science stream is 93.92 percent for girls and 91.04 percent for boys – a difference of 2.88 percent, a report in The Times of India pointed out.

Regarding the move, the Vice-Chancellor of Christ (deemed to be University), Fr Abraham VM, was quoted by the daily as saying, "Girls are smart, and this is not a new trend. If there is no higher cut-off, the college will have only girls. Higher cut-off is to bring in gender balance."

Generally too, cut-offs have been set quite high, with even the 85 percent benchmark not guaranteeing admission in the sought-after colleges. However, some colleges like St Joseph's PU College do not carry a cutoff for admission.
