The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is likely to introduce health science as a new subject in its curriculum for Class 9-12, India Today reported.

According to the report, the subject will relate to the basic knowledge of primary healthcare and the syllabus for it will be framed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

"We had done a small survey prior to planning this course on awareness related to basic health relief like what needs to be immediately done if a dog bites, before visiting a doctor. And we found that many are still not aware of basic primary healthcare needs," the report quoted an official as saying on the condition of anonymity.

The new syllabus, the report said, will provide students with a basic guideline on emergency measures that can be taken during medical emergencies.

"Because of lack of basic knowledge related to cure, patients are often brought to hospitals when they are critical. Many lives can be saved if the basic steps are followed," the official told India Today.

The new syllabus is currently under review by the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry and would be introduced in the new academic session (April 2019), said the report, citing sources.
