Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy-owned Plaza Hotel in New York
is slated to be auctioned next month, according to Bloomberg. If that happens, it will end
two years of uncertainty on the ownership of the property.
British businessmen and philanthropists David and Simon Reuben, who held the mortgage have reportedly fixed the auction for April 26, according to sources quoted by Bloomberg. Along with the Plaza, a trendy Manhattan property Dream Downtown hotel is being sold as a package. The combined mortgages for the two properties stand at about $500 million, sources add.
Roy, who has been in jail since 2014 for defrauding investors, also owns Dream Downtown along with Chatwal.
Situated off Central Park, the ownership of the storied
property has changed repeatedly over a period of more than a century. The earlier
owners include current US Presidential Candidate Donald Trump who got married
to his second wife there. Prince Alwaleed bin-Talal of Saudi Arabia, who was
the next owner still holds a minority stake in the hotel.
It was also the site of the 1985 signing of the historic Plaza Accord to devalue the US dollar.
