Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed with modest gains on Monday, 18 March,
The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 70.75 points to close at 38,095.07 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty finished trading at 11,462.20, up 35.35 points
However, both the indices failed to capitalise on the buoyant opening they enjoyed in morning trade on back of strong foreign fund inflows and the Asian markets that advanced ahead of US Federal Reserve meet starting Tuesday.
Sensex rose more than 0.80 percent to 38,369.59 while Nifty too breached the 11,500-mark in intra-day trading.
Mindtree, IOC, Kotak Mahindra, Bharti Infratel, Axis Bank, Asian Paints, Power Grid, TCS, M&M were among the major gainers, while Maruti Suzuki, Grasim, Vedanta, NTPC and Wipro were the losers.
The rupee also opened higher against the greenback and appreciated as much as 0.3 percent to 68.86, the highest in over seven months in morning trade.
