AK Joti Appointed Chief Election Commissioner

He is expected to assume office on 6 July after incumbent CEC Nasim Zaidi steps down.

AK Joti has been appointed as the next Chief Election Commissioner, the law ministry said on Monday. He will succeed Nasim Zaidi who steps down on 6 July.

Joti is currently the senior-most official in the Election Commission. He is expected to take charge immediately on 6 July.

A 1975-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Joti has previously served as Gujarat Chief Secretary, retiring from the post in 2013. He was reinstated into service in May 2015 when he took over as Election Commissioner, and will serve till next year when he turns 65.

He has also served as the state Vigilance Commissioner and worked in various capacities in his cadre, including as Chairman of the Kandla Port Trust between 1999 and 2004 and Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL).

An EC or a CEC has a tenure of six years in office or till he or she attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
