With the Delhi Metro’s expansion project nearing the completion of its third phase by next March, the number of trains will increase by 45 percent, claimed a report by TOI. By March 2017, the metro rail network will expand from 218 km to 348 km, and the number of trains will go up from its present 227 to 328. The number of coaches will also increase from 1,468 to 2,158.
This October onward, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will authorise the second phases of two of its upcoming corridors, namely, Magenta Line (Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden) and Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar). The lines are likely to be fully operational by March 2018.
Moreover, in a move to accommodate more passengers per train, the present six-coach trains will be converted into eight-coach ones, said the TOI report.
After the Blue Line, the second busiest corridor, the Yellow Line, will get 14 new eight-coach trains.
However, due to comparatively lower footfall, the Pink, Magenta and Violet Lines will have only six-coach trains. Most of the four-coach trains for the Red Line will be converted into six-coach ones. Also, from 10 six coach-trains, the Red Line will get a total of 39 soon.
Further, the DMRC will also hire additional staff, as part of its expansion efforts. The existing 9,000-strong staff will reportedly get an additional 3,000 staffers.
