A shelter home situated opposite Nizamuddin Dargah was reportedly demolished by DDA officials and the Delhi Police on Thursday.

The shelter was run by a Government NGO SPYM and Wishes and Blessings Foundation and was built by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board. The shelter housed 50-60 children and around 60 women.

The inhabitants were assured that the structure wouldn’t be razed as it was built on land given by the government, after a cluster of slums was demolished just three days prior to the incident.

Last night, all these women were out on the streets. Everyday, 6 rapes are happening in the capital. If something happens to them, who is responsible?
Swati Maliwal, DCW Chief

The DDA officials reportedly said that they were following orders of the Delhi High Court that instructed them to clear all illegal squatters from the region. The shelter home was razed as it did not have the required permission.

Swati Maliwal, the DCW Chief has promised strict action and wants the DDA to provide rehabilitation within the next 24 hours.
