Netflix is all set to give us a live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, the 90s space punk Japanese anime series that even took the west by a storm. The show has a cult following and often cited as the best anime series ever.

According to The Verge, the live action remake by Tomorrow Studios will have 10 episodes for the first season. What’s more, the makers have roped in Shinichiro Watanabe, who had directed the original anime, as consultant for the live action version.

We have yet to find out who the cast are.

What is ‘Cowboy Bebop’?

Cowboy Bebop is a Japanese sci-fi anime series, heavily influenced by jazz, that follows the exploits of bounty hunters Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, Jet Black and Radical Ed aboard the spaceship Bebop.

If you want to get a glimpse of how kick-ass the show was, here’s the opening Tank! for you.

The series was a critical and commercial success both in Japan and in the western markets for its clever handling of subjects like loneliness, existential ennui (read crisis) and dealing with a difficult past.

The show had 26 episodes.

Anime Vs Live Action

As soon as word was out that Netflix will produce a live action version of the anime series conversation among fans across social media show mixed feelings. While people are excited to relive their memories of the classic show, there is a lingering discomfort with the live action:

What if Netflix doesn’t do justice to the original?

ICYMI, Netflix has also given a live action version to popular anime Death Note and that did not go down well with the anime’s original fans.

Here’s hoping Cowboy Bebop live action will retain it’s anime glory and gain some fresh fans among the Gen Z as well.
