Regional content is the demand of the hour. The grand success of web series like Mirzapur on Amazon prime can be attributed to the fact that it bears a regional flavor that enabled a regional audience to relate to it. In an attempt to target a greater number of darshaks, more digital players are playing with regional content in engrossing formats to attract more viewers and boost audience numbers.

In October this year Hungama, a digital entertainment company announced its foray into original programming in regional language starting off with a Marathi series. Here is a list of more Regional web series that struck a chord with regional audience in 2018 with a view to making 2019 even bigger in regional language web series.

Telugu Tamasha : Chitra Vichtram on ZEE 5

On Zee5 is the Telugu original comedy web series deals with the life of two best friends who are desperate filmmakers. Both friends while trying to outdo each other to impress the lead actress of their film Ramya, fight about petty things and the story displays the mess that ensues. The series featured Anchor Ravi, Manoj Tanneru and Apoorva Srinivasan as the lead star cast.

Tamilian Tadka: Vella Raja on Amazon Prime

Amazon prime premiered its first episode of a Tamil web series on 7th of December this year. It created a social buzz within minutes after its premier. It’s a racy and a gripping thriller that has a Drug lord Vs Cop story. The story stars Boby Simha and Parvathy Nair in lead roles. The story of Vella Raja is about two men who land in the middle of a hostage crisis when staying at a lodge which happened to be drug criminal Deva’s hiding place.

Funny Fankars: Full Tight On SonyLiv

The digital platform SonyLiv also came up with its second Marathi web series in 2018, after successfully offering the first Marathi web series You Only Live Once(YOLO) in 2017. This is a seven episode series directed by Shriprasad Pawar. Having a contemporary tone and tenor this web series touches upon friendship, love and parenting. The story revolves around Adi (Akshay Kelkar) and his weird encounters with his parents creatively taking you through the twist and turns of a youngster life.

Kaleidoscopic Kala: Kaali on ZEE5

The digital platform Zee5 launched its first Bengali web series Kaali this year. This eight episode thriller stars actress Paoli Dam. Kaali is a story of woman hood, set in the underbelly of Kolkata, that takes you on a cliffhanger ride where a mother has one night to save her son. It is a multilayered story that will give you jitters as it approaches its climax. Kaali with its strong and thrilling story is touted Zee 5’s best to date.

What 2019 has in store for Regional Web Series?

Many regional web series are in the pipeline to entertain you in 2019. One of the most awaited is Alt Balaji’s First Bhojpuri web series Heroi Vardiwala starring Bhojpuri superstar Nirahua and Amrapali Dubey. After delivering multiple super hits on celluloid this web seriers will cater to a huge population of Bhojpuri speakers.

Many content production companies are also trying to tap this with an eye to 2019. Content Studio Applause Entertainment has many shows under production like the Tamil web series Victor, Bhojpuri Madhuri Talkies and Telugu Village Lo Vidduram.
