Admiration for the IAF pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s whiskers, the ‘gunslinger’ moustache, is soaring.

But it is not so easy to wear your hero’s wings. You can’t get the look overnight guys, not unless you have a beard already.

This customer at a barber’s shop in Kolar tried it.

From fans who want the # AbhinandanLook to trend, to the ‘Milk-Stache’ sported by the ‘Amul Girl’ in an Ad that says Mooch Nahin Toh Kuchh Nahi, celebrating his moustache is another way of celebrating the man – IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman who was welcomed home to Indian soil on Friday.

“It is called the The Wing Commander moustache and we can do it, but growth must be there,” says a hair dresser at a popular barber shop in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Inke hee naam se mashoor ho jayegee beshakh

It will no doubt be famous by his name, says Raju Bhaiyya who does beard and moocha trimming for male customers at popular neighborhood salon Cutting Edge in South Delhi. But to get the Abhinandan moocha you needed to have at least a 20 to 30 day stubble otherwise it won’t show, he says.

Fans of the gunslinger whiskers realise that this is something that will take a month’s work to prepare for and it was those who hadn’t had a close shave in a month who were the lucky ones – like this guy in Bangalore who looks super pleased to be sporting the whiskers.

A look that came to stand for courage and dignity itself, after all many had referenced Abhinandan’s moustache when welcoming the Wing Commander home on Friday as the nation breathed a collective sigh of relief upon his return to Indian soil.

Aap sacche hero hain, aur voh bhee sachchee moochon ke saath

You are a true hero, and that too with a real moustache says Akshay Mane on Twitter.

Badee moochon ke saath badee zimmedaari aati hai

“ With a great moustache comes great responsibility, welcome home” says Facebook user Rakesh Arora as quoted on ABP Live

We often follow the fashion styles of cinema heroes. For a change I want to draw inspiraton from a real life hero. Our soldiers sacrifice so much for us and this is our way of thanking them.

Captured Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman returned home from Pakistan on Friday to a hero's welcome, two days after he was captured when his MiG 21 was shot down.

Pakistani officials handed over Varthaman to Indian officials and the IAF, at the Attari-Wagah Border late Friday.
