Food delivery app Zomato is in the limelight once again, as their delivery executives have announced an indefinite strike in West Bengal protesting against delivering beef and pork. “The company is not listening to our demands & forcing us to deliver beef & pork against our will. We have been on strike for a week now,” the protesting delivery executives said.

As the news about the protest started doing a rounds on internet, a company spokesperson said in a statement, "There is a small group of partners in Howrah who have raised concerns, and we are looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."

“In a country as diverse as India, it is impossible to ensure that vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences are factored into delivery logistics,” the statement added.

However, Twitterati was quick to react to call out the delivery personnel.

‘1857? Nope, 2019’

Twitterati meanwhile, compared the executives’ protest to the revolt of 1857, which also was on the issue of beef and pork. For instance, a Twitter user said, “Zomato should understand the sentiments and not behave like East India Company.”

Some pointed out that selling beef and pork is legal in West Bengal and so, “doing such protests is nonsense.”

Citing a previous incident where Zomato had been in a controversy on the religion of the delivery executive, a user questioned Zomato on their stance of “food has no religion.”

Seeing that delivery executives from Zomato’s competitors like Swiggy or Uber Eats weren’t a part of this protest, some even speculated that this might be a “manufactured protest.”
