You know those super annoying yet catchy songs that you just can’t get out of your head for days? The insanely viral Pen-Pinneaple-Apple-Pen is exactly that song. And now it has a world record!
‘PPAP’ has more than 65 million YouTube views and was the first Japanese song to get into the US Billboard top 100 singles in 26 years. Guinness World Records recognised the 45-second song on Friday as the shortest one to make the top 100.
The 53-year-old Japanese comedian behind the viral hit, who’s popularly known as Pikotaro, is astonished by the global success of the song.
He expressed amazement that a song that he said cost 1,00,000 yen ($1,000) to produce in a six-hour session in a rented studio could explode worldwide.
"The internet is amazing!" he said.
Pikotaro said it feels great to be imitated, and that those from India are his favourite so far.
The song got a major boost and started spreading globally when pop star Justin Bieber tweeted it was his favourite video, Pikotaro said.
The performer, whose real name is Kazuhito Kosaka according to Japanese entertainment news media, was little known before ‘PPAP’ took off in September.
