Famous singer and cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika’s son Tej Hazarika has said that he will not be accepting the Bharat Ratna on behalf of his late father. He took this decision a day before the Citizenship Amendment Bill was to be put forward in the Rajya Sabha.
Tej Hazarika also added that his father would “never have endorsed what appears, quite transparently, to be an underhanded way of pushing a law against the will and benefit of the majority .”
Some in Opposition
Many questioned Tej Hazarika’s decision to not accept the Bharat Ratna award that was bestowed upon Bhupen Hazarika last month.
People also stated that the award was a matter of pride for the entire state of Assam and Tej’s decision to boycott the award was inappropriate.
Some in Support
While many were unhappy with Tej’s decision, some came to his aid.
A Twitter user even compared his decision to Rabindranath Tagore renouncing his knighthood in the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
What do you think about Tej Hazarika’s decision to not receive the Bharat Ratna bestowed on his father, Bhupen Hazarika?
