The Supreme Court ruled in favour of adult couples living together without marriage while asserting that a 20-year-old Kerala woman, whose marriage had been annulled, could choose whom she wanted to live with.
Live-in relationships were now recognised by the Legislature and had found a place under the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, said the apex court.
‘These Rules Are Barely Practised in India’
Reddit users largely welcomed this move but expressed their apprehension over its implementation.
But Twitter had a more divided view on the apex court’s judgment.
‘About Time’
Many users welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision.
‘The Fundamental Idea of Family will Crumble’
Many others had strong objections to this ruling and felt that marriage is necessary for couples to stay together.
‘It Doesn’t Really Matter’
There were a few who said that this ruling wouldn’t matter to self-appointed moral policemen and that they would continue about their business.
