Mixed Reactions Over SC’s Approval for Live-In Relationships

While Reddit appeared more or less on board with the judgment, Twitter was, as usual, starkly divided.

The Supreme Court ruled in favour of adult couples living together without marriage while asserting that a 20-year-old Kerala woman, whose marriage had been annulled, could choose whom she wanted to live with.

Live-in relationships were now recognised by the Legislature and had found a place under the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, said the apex court.

‘The Fundamental Idea of Family will Crumble’

Many others had strong objections to this ruling and felt that marriage is necessary for couples to stay together.

Are we not encouraging promiscuity and licentiousness while blindly following western view of life? This way fundamental idea of family will eventually crumble n we too would be leading an emotionless life, sex becoming just a source of carnal pleasure, devoid of belongingness.

Two adults can live together or away without marriage. The point is if they have a child and fill a school joining form they should be able to fill the row that says "Father's name". Some social systems and processes help in ordered way of functioning without infringing on rights

‘It Doesn’t Really Matter’

But does it really matter? It will rarely bring any difference to moral policing prevalent across communities.
