Alert! This new comic from Mumbai will not just keep you entertained, but also call you out in public and, perhaps, leave you red-faced. Deepika Mhatre - maid turned stand-up comic - has been leaving her audiences in stitches with her performances. She uses her past experiences - as a domestic help - to create content for her comic routines.
She was interviewed by fellow stand-up comic - Aditi Mittal - in a series that recognises top female artists who work in an unconventional way:
Mhatre Talks to Aditi Mittal
Mhatre used to work multiple jobs in a day to support her family, while taking care of her three children.
She has also described how she was discriminated against due to the stereotypes that surround her job.
“No Madam Can Scare Me”
Her journey as a comic began when one of her employers - whom she describes as someone “unlike the others” - organised a talent show. While others chose to sing and dance, Mhatre delighted the crowd with her jokes.
Mhatre has used comedy to convey powerful messages about the social evils of our society. She has not only been complimented for her hilarious performances, but also her ability to speak on behalf of domestic helpers.
Let us know what you think about Mhatre’s style of comedy.
