Till last week, we were all going about our mundane lives.
Waking up, commuting to work, working in between coffee breaks and then crashing in front of the TV. All this while, we were blissfully unaware that Taher Shah was preparing to launch his song ‘ Angel’ that would leave us all flabbergasted.
That’s a shame, really. If there was ever a man who needed a Grammy, Taher Shah is it. Of course, you’ve watched the video of the song where Taher Shah refers to himself or no one in particular as mankind’s angel. If that seems too out there to you, worry not – he subtly drives home the point with a pair of shimmery wings that he has on his back.
Anyway, we decided that you can never have enough of a good thing and scoured YouTube for some other videos that might make you want to gouge your eyes out – or punch your ear in (whichever’s fastest).
Sunday Morning Love You
There are times when children just won’t learn the days of the week. And desperate times call for desperate measures.
Turn to this wonderful number by Bhim Niroula. Mr. Niroula originally hails from Nepal but obviously he is making his mark in this world with his stunning videos. The song features some deep lyrics that are educational too. Sample this. ‘Sunday morning love you, Monday morning love you, I wanna love you everyday’.
You get the drift, yeah?
Vennu Mallesh - It’s My Life What Ever I Wanna Do
Vennu Mallesh is anti-establishment and this song does a great job of bringing to the fore the inner frustration of a young man in today’s India.
In what is obviously a slap in the face of sanity and singing, Vennu Mallesh sings about how his neighbours view him, what his friends think of him and at some point, he also mentions that he is his father’s father. Yes, that had me confused as well. But hey, to his credit, there is a girl with an accent to up the glamour quotient.
Indian Spiderman
Superheroes need a break too. (What with all that clingy costumes and all.) And for a breather, sometimes, people like Spiderman head to India. You know, to find themselves, do some yoga and get a bad belly from eating curry.
The superhero took a detour and headed straight for the green meadows to galavant around some trees with a desi girl. Because she’s Indian and that’s how we roll, she launches into a romantic number where our superhero matches her, step to step. The costume maybe a little tacky but hey, he’s on vacay remember?
Jab Se Hui Hai Mohabbat (Worst Choreography Ever)
Heroes in Indian movies are meant to know how to shake a leg or two. (I am talking to you, Sunny Deol.)
Turns out, not everyone got the memo. Now, we don’t know what movie this song was taken from or who deemed this fellow good enough to be lead, but they made this song. And in what is a treat for sore eyes – or the cause of them – the man in the video helplessly flails his arms in what is supposed to be choreography and at one point looks baffled when his lady love disappears from his arms. That expression is what our face looks like as well when we watch this dude.
We feel you.
Angoor Ka Dana Hoon - Sanam Bewafa
This list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include at least one of the gems that Bollywood regularly throws up. This song, however, serves a dual purpose.
One, that it makes grapes sound like a very sexy fruit which is an achievement in itself. Second, it explains the process a grape has to go through to become a raisin and I don’t know about you but I could certainly use that information. I hear that poking grapes with needles became quite a fad in those days but that’s unconfirmed. Lucky tailors.
