“Your parents fixed you guys up and you got married just like that??????”

Some Westerners find the idea of arranged marriage quite whacky.

Arranged marriage, though widely accepted and considered a norm in Indian society, is not a very familiar notion in many countries abroad. Some Westerners receive a quite a shock when introduced to the idea.

Something similar happened to beloved talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel.

On his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, he spoke to an Indian couple in the audience who had had an arranged marriage. What followed was a hilarious exchange between Kimmel and the couple, as he tried to understand the nitty-gritties of the system.

The Indian couple explained how 90% of marriages in India are arranged and it’s the parents who choose the bride and the groom. Intrigued, Kimmel asked them whether the parents know one another, to which they replied in the negative.

Here in ABC we too try arranged marriages. They are called The Bachelor (sic).

A visibly baffled Kimmel asked them how exactly these marriages are fixed. The couple told Kimmel about marriage bureaus and matrimonial sites and how they function.

You are picked on your photos and you are telling me that you turn into a resume in a marriage bureau? And what, is there like an interview which follows? (sic)

What if you don’t like the guy or the girl? What do you do then? And would you want your kids to have arranged marriages? These were some more questions Kimmel asked.

Clearly, Kimmel has a lot to catch up on!
