Donald Trump is the Salman Khan of US politics. Ek baar comment karke, he doesn’t give a damn about his own statements, which leads to a number of contradictions in his political stance. Trump turned a year older on June 14, but is he any wiser?
The US Presidential candidate has courted quite a few controversies through his campaign for his anti-Islamic, pro-gun rights approach and largely racist, discriminatory speeches. While he makes wild promises, his core ideas largely remain the same.
Here’s an easy, quick and quirky reckoner of all that makes Donald ‘Trump’ American politics.
Gun Control
Donald Trump has consistently supported the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution which says: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Easy access to guns and other dangerous weapons have led to a lot of accidental as well as amateur killings in the country. There has been a widespread demand to curb guns and their licenses, but all such demands have been largely trumped by Donald. “We’re going to cherish the Second Amendment,” Trump said during his Washington campaign in May.
He also tweeted to express his ‘feelings’.
Foreign Policy
Trump has an elaborate plan to build a huge wall between the United States and Mexico. Beyond that, there isn’t much in his foreign policy except ‘Making America Great Again’ and bombing a few middle-eastern nations.
“I will...quickly and decisively bomb the hell out of ISIS, will rebuild our military and make it so strong no one - and I mean, no one - will mess with us.” said Trump in a campaign ad in November 2015.
Healthcare
Offering no alternatives, Trump has always maintained that he would repeal Obamacare, with ‘something more amazing’. In his eloquent words:
We are going to repeal Obamacare. We are going to repeal Obamacare. We are going to replace Obamacare with something so much better.Donald Trump
Crime & Safety
At a Candidate forum last year, Trump said - “Police and law enforcement, I will never, ever, let them down,” Once again, the man who is quick with his words, refused to elaborate on his claims.
What’s the plan? What will actually happen? Oh wait, everybody will have their own guns, and they’ll all be safe. Sorted.
Taxes
In a campaign rally in January this year, Trump confessed - “I try and pay as little tax as possible, because I hate what they do with my tax money. I hate the way they spend our money.”
A possible presidential candidate saying he ‘cheats’ on his tax payment is definitely a good connect for the public, but a bad omen for the public exchequer. Donald Trump has campaigned that he will bring down taxes for everyone, but will he be able to encourage the citizens (or himself, really) to pay them too?
Education and Funding
Donald Trump, when quizzed about possible areas to which budgetary spending can be cut, said: “We are going to cut the Department of Education.”
While 3 Idiots may have been enlightening, this 1 idiot is frightening.
