Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey-starrer Chhapaak’s trailer released on 10 December. The film revolves around the real-life story of Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor.
The film is co-produced by Deepika, along with Meghna. The trailer traces the incident of the attack and the legal process that followed.
But here are five things that Deepika Padukone said at the trailer launch in Mumbai, that left the audiences rooting for her.
When Deepika Broke Down Right After Watching the Trailer
The trailer played twice in the theatre, after which Deepika Padukone was called upon to talk about the film. The actor got up on the stage with a smile but when asked to talk about Chhapaak she broke down. “I knew that I’ll be called upon but I wasn’t prepared to talk about the trailer,” she said, adding that every time she sees the trailer, she breaks down.
‘I Didn’t Feel Any Different on Seeing Myself With the Prosthetic’
When one of the audience members asked Deepika what she felt like when she saw herself with the prosthetic and if she got ‘scared’, here’s what she said:
It’s so ironic that I didn’t feel any different and that’s the day I found my character and that’s the day I knew what to do in this movie. I don’t think we should be or are defined by our external appearances.Deepika Padukone, Actor
‘I Burned the Prosthetic After We Were Done and Watched It Burn Till the End’
At the trailer launch, Deepika Padukone talked about how she lived with her character ‘Malti’ for months together.
“Characters that you play never truly leave you. You might get done with the film but a part of the character stays within. I remember on the last day when we were finally done with the shoot, I asked Meghna and got an extra piece of prosthetic made. I went to the back of the trailer and burned that piece of prosthetic. Everyone started leaving and I told them that I want to watch it burn.”Deepika Padukone, Actor
‘Laxmi Is One of the Most Unique People I Have Met’
Deepika Padukone’s character ‘Malti’ in Chhapaak is inspired by Laxmi Agarwal, an acid-attack survivor. Deepika added that Laxmi is the most unique person she has met. “Laxmi has this spirit about her, this attitude which is very unique. She always has anecdotes to share and I can sit and talk to her for hours,” Deepika said.
‘Laxmi Said She Thought She Was Looking At a Mirror When She Saw Me’
Deepika revealed that she was nervous about playing the character because she has never played a role where it’s inspired by someone who she can meet and talk with. “I could feel the pressure and it was on the first day of the shoot when Laxmi came to the sets and I was very nervous. But when she saw me she said that to her it looked like she was seeing herself in the mirror. I felt that’s the biggest validation an actor can ever ask for,” said Deepika.
Chhapaak releases on 10 January alongside Tanhaji and Jumanji.
