A fifteen-year-old’s latest discovery may well change the way we study history. While the rest of us go about our fairly ordinary days, this teenager believes that he has discovered a a forgotten Mayan city using satellite photos and Mayan astronomy.

William Gadoury, from Quebec, theorised that the Mayan civilisation built their towns and cities according to their star charts and found that the cities line up with major constellations.

Using satellite images from the Canadian Space Agency, which he then mapped on Google Earth, he ‘discovered’ a city where a star in the constellation suggested it would be.

William has named the unexplored city in the Yucatan jungle the very cool K’aak Chi or the Mouth of Fire.

Daniel De Lisle, of the Canadian Space Agency, said the area had been difficult to study because of its dense vegetation. However, he confirmed that linear features suggested that there could be something there – perhaps something as big as man-made structures.

Thanks William! You’ve both impressed us immensely and made us feel deeply under-achieved.
