We have seen pregnant models walk on the ramp before, but what makes Maia Ruth Lee’s appearance at New York Fashion Week unusual is the proud display of her bump through the open buttons of her dress at the Eckhaus Latta Spring 2018 show.
Wearing a lavender cardigan dress, she casually exhibited the eight-month-old baby bump, ‘making motherhood chic’ and in the process, again mainstreaming pregnant women that feel alienated by the fashion industry at a moment they themselves have conflicting feelings about how their bodies are changing.
Users have been hailing 34-year-old Lee, who is the Director of Wide Rainbow, a nonprofit after-school arts program for her confident walk.
Instagrammers called the look “so chic, so cool”, while also adding “Now if only mainstream maternity offerings would click that we don't all want to suddenly wear hearts, roses and small bird patterns now we're pro creating, that would be awesome!”
We will just leave with this comment left by grammer, olivialoney, “She looks like she's running the world.”
