Rewriting history in the Indian Parliament, Article 370 was effectively revoked on 5 August 2019. Only time will tell whether it was a historic decision or a disastrous one. We live among people who are quick to form judgements and opinions, and sometimes with half baked knowledge. Same is the case with the Kashmir issue, as people have jumped to conclusions without confirming the facts and knowing the details of this landmark move.
Being a ‘woke’ and an aware citizen is a good thing, but posting anything on social media without checking its authenticity, is a bit irresponsible. Tweets, or posts go a long way in terms of influencing people and their opinions, and hence some thought needs to go behind it. This applies to everyone, whether they are in favor of this decision or not.
Do you even know why people are choosing to change their profile picture? Do you know who Raja Hari Singh was? Do you know what Article 370 comprises of? Knowing only one aspect of an issue, does not make us aware of the whole picture. As it’s rightly said, ‘half knowledge is worse than ignorance’.
It’s sad that we don’t know what the Kashmiris, who are actually being affected by this, think about this, but to get a better sense we went on to the streets to talk to people. While it’s all fun and games to watch some of the factually incorrect responses, it shouldn’t let us downplay the gravity of the situation in the valley.
