Many people don’t realize just how much sugar and calories we drink in a day. Dr. Shubham Pant will help you and your family to make smart choices towards a healthier life.
It’s hot, you are thirsty and a chilled bottle of cola is beckoning you.
Before you pop it open, consider this: If this were a cup of tea or coffee, How many teaspoons of sugar would you be consuming?
Let me make it easy for you:
1 teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4 grams of sugar and 1 bottle of cola can have up to 44 grams of sugar. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to do the math.
Now consider this: Would you put this much sugar in your morning cup of tea?
Once you start on the soda habits, its hard to quit as you start craving these sweetened beverages.
Here a few tips on how to get over this addiction:
1. Take it slow: just don’t stop cold turkey. Decrease your consumption over a period of time (but make it a fixed period; not a five-year plan).
2. Transition to sparkling water or soda as it may help with the carbonation craving. Nimbu-soda anyone?
3. It is important to realise how tough it is to burn those calories. You have to walk 4 km/hr for ONE hour just to burn off one 500 ml bottle of cola. It’s time to ask yourself, “Is that soda really worth it?”
4. And when all fails: listen to the most famous baba of them all: Baba Sehgal and reach for some Thanda Thanda Paani!
