Ahilyabai Holkar was the Holkar Queen of the Malwa kingdom in late 18th century. She married Khanderrao Holkar, the son of a Maratha commander who managed Malwa on behalf of the Peshwas, at a young age. After her husband was killed in battle in 1754, her father-in-law saved her from sati and she went on to became regent to her son who ascended the throne. But after her son too died young, Ahilyabai took control of the kingdom.
She turned out to be one of the finest rulers the Maratha empire had ever seen. Ahilyabai was a brave ruler who took care of her people and brought about positive change in her kingdom. She ruled for over 30 incredible years and marked her place in history as one of the most inspiring people from Madhya Pradesh. Her legacy lives on in Indore and Maheshwar.
