Not cool to kill Patrick Dempsey’s character Derek Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy.

Derek Shepherd:

Great God of Neurosurgery.  (Every day is a “beautiful day to save lives”)

McDreamy: Eyes you can go swimming in, gorgeous lopsided smile, lovely hair, etc.

Husband: Vulnerable with adulterous ex-wife. Later, virtuous, caring  husband who got married on a post-it. Once heroically even saved wife from drowning.

Father: The kind who would wear their daughter’s tiaras, sip their tea from plastic toy kitchenware, etc.

Perfect brother, colleague, person to go fishing with.

The Internet is shedding rivulets of tears. Big Bi*ch Shonda Rhimes, who is akin to George RR Martin when it comes to killing off characters, has killed her best character in (just) a car crash. It wasn’t even a ferryboat accident or being shot at by a rogue shooter. After 11 years of playing Derek, Patrick Dempsey has left the show leaving behind a large void viewers don’t think anybody can fill.

Social media is flooded with Resurrect Derek campaigns and Instagram can’t stop with the #RIPDerek posts. The post Grey’s selfie is now trending and everybody hates the song If I lay here.

Are people going to stop watching the show? I don’t think so. Everyone wants to know what’s going to happen next. Some people are convinced that Derek will rise from the dead. And as a saving grace, there’s still that beautiful Jackson Avery to watch.

The new culture of killing the protagonists off is gaining momentum after Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. While it may raise viewership briefly, fans find it unfair and ridiculous, as it leaves a sense of bitterness from the show. This culture needs to be replaced with happier endings and smiling faces so that night sleep is easy to come by.

Not cool, Shonda.
