A ‘bald woman’ is almost like a misnomer; girls getting a buzz cut or a smooth shaved head is taboo. Unless you are Diandra Soares, brace yourself for puzzled looks from strangers, a probing questionnaire from relatives and anguished parents.
Meet some girls-next-door who went bald by choice and read about their experiences on living it up with a smooth and shiny top.
A Bald Instinct
One fine day Supriyaa Uthaiah, a Bengaluru based brand and marketing professional, just had this urge to shave her hair at a men’s salon with a Gillette razor blade. And she just went ahead and did it!
Yes, that was it, there were no compelling reasons for her to go bald and some reactions Supriyaa got for her ‘new look’ were hilarious:
I was asked if I had cancer, AIDS. This guy at finance told me, please come meet me again only when you have hair. I could have made a killing if I just recorded expressions on people’s faces and put it on YouTube.
– Supriyaa Uthaiah
Bald is Sexy
But it’s not always all negative, being bald is quite sexy too. Priyanka Jain a media professional says men tend to find it hot. She decided to go lose her tresses just like that and remembers the experience fondly.
Men would just come up and start talking - some amused why I had done it, some finding it hot, wanting to touch my bald head. I enjoyed all the attention.
– Priyanka Jain
Making a Statement
28-year-old Pooja Talashi, says she first went bald to make a statement, she wanted to redeem herself from sexism. And a week ago she opted for the bald look again simply because she remembered how awesome it felt the first time!
Last time I went to dance and met friends and common friends. They all seem to find it sexy and intimidating.
– Pooja Talashi
Philarisa Nongpiur, a Delhi based researcher working on human rights issues remembers her trip to the hairdresser when she decided to completely chop her hair for a bald look.
I had closed my eyes shut while the hairdresser had snipped off a piece of my hair. That was the only time my heart skipped a beat as I knew there was no turning back. But when he was done, I really thought this was, by far, the best look I had donned.
– Philarisa Nongpiur
Though her boyfriend accompanied her to the salon and approved, Philarisa’s family was shocked on seeing her. But they gradually went on to love the look.
Beat the Heat
However it’s not always a fashion statement, Anjali Kukreja, a dance teacher and choreographer by profession went bald just a month ago for a personal reason. But after sporting the look for a while, she now feels it is the easiest way to kill the summer heat.
How to Wear the Bald Look
If you are thinking of taking razor to your locks, here are some tips from the girls who’ve been there and done that on how to sport the bald look. Supriyaa recommends wearing T-shirts that show more of your neck, she believes high necks don’t go along with a bare head. Philarisa suggests no make-up or nude make-up and kajal to go with the bald pate. Anjali votes for heavy danglers to take the attention off your head and to your face.
So if you’re convinced about doing a lil bare and dare this summer, go for it!
