Are the memories of the relationship you had for a 'mukhtasar' time now haunting you? Is that affair you had for a 'mukhtasar' period not letting you move on? Then maybe it’s time you understood the value of everything that indeed is 'mukhtasar,' which means 'in short', 'in a nutshell'.
In this episode of Urdunama, The Quint's Fabeha Syed explains the importance of everything that's 'mukhtasar' in our lives – how to embrace it if it nurtures, and how to avoid it if it pricks.
There are some who might find it difficult express their feelings, and end up using more words than are actually required. For them, conveying their emotions in a concise way is a huge challenge. But Urdu poet Moin Ehsan Jazbi has beautifully summed up his life in a couplet:
Mukhtasar ye hai humaari daastaan-e-zindagi
ek sukoon-e-dil ki khaatir umr bhar tadpa kiye
The poet is expressing his disdain about having lived a life that was full of trials, which is why he says that he has yearned and suffered all his life for inner peace.
The word ‘mukhtasar’ is also used in the context of defining ‘time’. Another Urdu poet Meeraji says:
Jaise hoti aai hai, waise basar ho jaaygi
Zindagi ab mukhtasar se mukhtasar ho jaaygi
The poet says that he’ll keep living his life as is – a short life that will become even shorter now, after all the tribulations he has gone through.
The rich poetry and literature that gives us such gems is suggestive of the fact that life is ‘mukhtasar’, and that we should embrace the small joys.
