I know of someone whose skin tight clothes make me anxious. I mean that poor girl is a fashion victim but it must really really hurt to sit or stand or walk in those super tight clothes!

Let’s admit, once in a while we’re all guilty of squatting, stretching and jumping on the bed, trying to zip up the newly washed jeans. This one time in college, I even wore a wet pair of jeans and let it dry on my body in the belief that it will shrink to fit my form! Crazy, but not hazardous! So I thought.

But sometimes the trend can pinch more than your wallet and crush more than your ego. After reports of the 35-year-old woman in Sydney collapsing for hours due to her skinny jeans, doctors have issued a denim warning!

Wearing tight clothes day in and day out, puts undue stress on your body and it may not respond in a favourable way.

What Can Go Wrong In Tight Clothes?

What happens when your tie suffocates or the pencil skirt is too tight?

Doctors say clothing isn’t designed to give you a shape you don’t have. So you’re missing the point if you wear skinny jeans and snug tummy tuckers to lose a couple of dress sizes.

Doctors feel those tight clothes can squeeze more than your silhouette, temporarily pinching the nerves in your legs and hips causing something called, meralgia paresthetica which the 35-year-old woman in Sydney got.

Tummy reducers and figure hugging tank tops can lead to digestive issues, heart burn and chronic back ache.

Tight pants and briefs for men can cause bladder infections, fungal issues and damage sperm count. There have been many cases of testicles getting twisted (two “t” words you don’t want to see in one sentence), resulting in immediate surgery.

Tight clothes and tighter undergarments trap heat and the sweat can give rise to yeast infections!

Fashion Trend Or Health Hazard?

Killer Heels: The agony of stilettos is understood by most women. They’re sexy, empowering and make your calves look so much longer but all great things come with a tag! Tight jeans and high heels are a killer combination which can alter bone structure and cause nerve damage!

And if Barbie can switch to flats after 56 years, high time you kick your tippy toes for some comfort.

Corsets: They were the curse of Edwardian and Victorian women but are back in vogue with the likes of Kylie Minogue and Kim Kardashian donning them.

Neck Tie: The corporates in tight buttoned down shirts and ties run a high risk of blindness. Long term pressure on the neck can constrict the nerve which gives blood supply to the eyes causing glaucoma. So men, learn to loosen up your ties once in while.

Pencil Skirts: From Beyoncé’s to Miranda Kerr, pencil skirts are popping up everywhere. Invariably tight, cinched in at the waist and falling just below the knee, in the long run, these tight skirts can lead to deformed feet, back pain and unhealthy walking patterns.

What You Can Do

If you want to continue in your skinnies despite the health warnings, doctors say, you must go stretchy. Give your body a little room to breathe. Rejig your wardrobe and don’t wear the same tight clothes and shoes everyday.

Another tip: For the love of your pretty feet, ditch the heels. They only add to circulation problems.

As the tight trend continues to squeeze society one leg at a time, just remember to wear them responsibly.
