KK Venugopal Replaces Mukul Rohatgi as Attorney General of India

Senior lawyer and constitutional expert KK Venugopal on Monday officially took over as the next Attorney General of India.

Last week, President Pranab Mukherjee had approved his appointment.

Venugopal succeeded Mukul Rohatgi, who stepped down after the end of his first term.

Katankot Venugopal has held the office of Additional Solicitor General during the reign of former PM Morarji Desai. He was also conferred the Padma Vibhushan award in 2015. Previously, he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Venugopal, who has been practicing law for over 50 years, also appeared for senior BJP leader LK Advani in the Babri Masjid demolition case at the Supreme Court.
