The spiritual head of Ajmer Sharif dargah has called upon Muslims to give up eating beef, arguing that even Babur had instructed his son not to kill cows. Zainul Abedin Khan, the diwan of the shrine, said it was wrong to kill an animal solely to satisfy a craving.

Khan added that it's everyone's duty to be compassionate to other religions.

Gaye unki aastha ka sawaal hai. Isiliye humara farz banta hai ki agar hum gaye ka ghosht nahi khayenge, humaari sehat par koi asar nahi padega (Cows are holy to them [Hindus]. It’s our duty to give up beef, it won’t affect our health if we do.)

Khan also vowed to swear off beef.

My family and I have taken a pledge on this day that we will never have beef for the rest of our lives.

The diwan, who is the direct descendant in the 22nd generation of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, also supported the Gujarat government's recent law that rewarded life sentence to those found guilty of killing cows. He appealed to the government to pass a national law on the cow slaughter issue

Khan made the statements at the end of the 805th Annual urs (death anniversary) of Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisty. Other heads of sufi shrines also gathered at the dargah to demand a complete ban on sale of "all forms of beef", as it was causing animosity between Hindus and Muslims, reported Times of India.

According to Hindustan Times, Khan also condemned the practice of triple talaq, arguing that it's unlawful and against the Quran and Sharia.
