Gurmehar Kaur, the daughter of a Kargil martyr, never imagined a social media post would make her the centre of a volley of unwarranted attention.

Now, Javed Akhtar has commented on the issue, expressing his support for her.

But the people who Akhtar’s tweet was directed at, did not take it lying down.

Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, who had earlier joined cricketer Virender Sehwag and Randeep Hooda in mocking Kaur, retorted to Akhtar saying:

“(While you may have written poems, even I have made history for India on a world platform).”

Dutt’s earlier tweet mocked Kaur’s campaign against war, saying:

He also shared a video by Super Londay that said “Pakistan did kill your father. We are proud of your father. Can’t say the same about you. I’m sorry.”

Actor Anupam Kher, who has been a vocal proponent of ‘nationalism’ also joined in, saying:

Earlier, cricketer Virender Sehwag also took a sly dig at her, stirring up a controversy.

Actor Randeep Hooda had joined Sehwag in his mocking analogy, which came under heavy criticism by Barkha Dutt and Shekar Gupta.

Gurmeher is a 20-year-old Delhi University student who had started a social media campaign against the violence caused by ABVP in Delhi University’s North Campus on 22 February.

While criticising her for this campaign, people have raked up an earlier video of her where she said “Pakistan didn’t kill my father, war did.”

On Tuesday, she chose to withdraw her campaign after facing rape threats by ABVP supporters and being trolled on social media.
