The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) is likely to take action against the Tamil Nadu government’s Jallikattu bill this week, reports the Times of India.

The AWBI is one of the petitioners in the Supreme Court case against the conduct of the bull-taming sport. “No specific resolution has been moved yet but the likelihood (of taking steps to challenge the bill) is there this week,” AWBI board member and legal sub-committee head Anjali Sharma told the daily.

This statement from the AWBI comes even as the SC agreed to deliver the judgement on the Jallikattu issue next week. The Centre had, on Friday, requested the apex court to delay its verdict in view of the prevailing tension in the state.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi advised Justice Dipal Misra that it would be more appropriate for the judgement to be delivered after at least a week.

“The Centre and the state are in talks to find a way out in the matter and our request is that the court should not deliver the judgement for at least a week,” Rohatgi told the bench that reserved the verdict.

The bench agreed to reserve the verdict after hearing the AG’s submission. This allowed the Tamil Nadu government time to draft an ordinance, get approval from the Governor and the President and then table it in the Assembly. The Jallikattu bill was passed on Monday by the Legislative Assembly.

With the AWBI now saying that they will move the Supreme Court over the Jallikattu bill, it remains to be seen if the apex court will accept the petition this week.
