Five senior college students, accused of ragging first-year students of a Government Polytechnic College in Kottayam’s Nattakom, have surrendered before the police. They are to be produced before court on Monday, reports ANI.
Three more students will be arrested in the case, the police said.
One of the victims has been been admitted to a hospital in Thrissur, where he has been put on dialysis after being diagnosed with severe kidney damage. The victim underwent dialysis three times after being admitted to the hospital 10 days ago, police said. Another student has been admitted to a hospital in Ernakulam.
In two separate police complaints, two students, including the one currently undergoing treatment at the Thrissur hospital, have alleged that they were subjected to brutal ragging by their seniors at the institute.
The accused in both incidents are members of the same group. Two cases have been registered against them, police said, adding that an investigation is underway.
The students were reportedly brutally ragged in the college hostel by senior students, who allegedly forced them to consume liquor laced with harmful substances. The victims were also made to do heavy physical exercise, including multiple push-ups.
The accused students were booked early this month. They have also been suspended from the institution.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy visited the student at the hospital in Thrissur and urged the government to bear the expenses of the student's treatment.
The state human rights commission has sought a report from the education department on the alleged ragging incident.
