‘Will Send Najeeb to 72 Virgins’: JNU Student Recalls Mob’s Threat

Eyewitnesses say missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed was bleeding profusely from his mouth and nose.

It has been a week since MSc first year student Najeeb Ahmed went missing from his hostel in the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus without a trace, and new eyewitness accounts are surfacing.

The Quint had earlier reported that broadly two narratives involving the alleged altercations prevail on campus. One is that Najeeb somehow got into an argument with three ABVP members who came to his hostel room. They were campaigning for the upcoming hostel elections.

The argument escalated, following which a bunch of ABVP members — in presence of the warden and the private security personnel deployed on campus — beat up Najeeb.

The other story, as claimed and propagated by the ABVP, involves Najeeb slapping one of the ABVP members because he had issues with the red thread the campaigner was wearing on his wrist.

Eyewitnesses are still recounting details of what transpired on the night that Najeeb was last seen in the hostel.

"Issko 72 houron ke paas bhejna hai (We will send him to 72 virgins),” eyewitnesses heard someone from the mob saying, CNN News 18 reported.

Another eyewitness, an MPhil student of the School of International Studies said Najeeb was the one bleeding profusely from his mouth and nose even though Vikrant Kumar, a student from ABVP, claimed Najeeb had beaten him up for no reason.

Khan claimed that Najeeb was beaten and showered with communal slurs by a mob of 25-30 students on his way to the Warden’s office.

CNN News 18 quoted Khan as saying:

The Warden should have been more strict and unbiased. When inside his office all the blame was put on Najeeb’s head. He was constantly abused even inside his office. They kept on saying ‘Issko 72 houron ke paas bhejna hai’ (We will send him to 72 virgins). You know what it means.

Contradicting a letter alleging Najeeb of having an unsound temperament, his roommate Mohammad Qasim said that Najeeb had no temperamental issues and kept to himself.

Can you perceive any mentally-unstable student getting through in one of the toughest courses in JNU? He was very intelligent and studious type.

Najeeb’s cousin sister Sadaf Musharraf told IANS

Although, an FIR has been filed and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to trace Najeeb, the communal rift in the premier university is constantly widening and has become more obvious than ever before.
