Ruby Rai, the school girl who’s at the centre of the Bihar topper scam, and who has now been arrested, said that she only wanted to pass, but she never imagined her father would make her a topper.
“Maine to Papa se kaha tha pass karwa dijiye, unhone ne to top hi karwa diya,” is reportedly what Rai told her interrogators, according to The Indian Express.
After Rai couldn’t answer basic questions about her subject in an interview, the arts topper triggered a controversy which led to an inquiry into the Bihar Class 12 boards, the Vishun Roy College and its principal, Bachcha Rai, among others.
She was very forthright in accepting that she did not deserve to be a topper.Manu Maharaj, Head of the Special Investigation Team
The government is also divided on Rai’s arrest, with some alleging that a 17-year-old has been punished, while her parents are free.
Education Minister Upendra Kushwaha said Rai’s father was party to the conspiracy engineered by Bachcha Rai, reported NDTV. Investigators are now trying to establish a link between her father, and principal Bachcha Rai, to see if he bribed the latter to land his daughter the top spot, the report said.
