Guwahati, March 28 (IANS) The Assam Police on Wednesday said that they have arrested six more officers of the Assam Civil Service (ACS) and allied services for their alleged involvement in the multi-crore cash for job scam carried out by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).
Police said that while five officers - Rituraj Gogoi, Kaushik Kalita, Satyajit Sarkar, Abhishek Borbora and Barnali Devi - were arrested from different locations on late Tuesday night, another officer, Joydev Mahanta was arrested on Wednesday morning.
Police in Assam's Dibrugarh have been probing the multi-crore scam since 2016 and arrested the then APSC Chairman Rakesh Paul, two members - Samedur Rahman and Basanta Doloi - and three other officers of the APSC for their involvement in accepting huge bribes for the plum positions in the administration.
With the arrest of the six officers in last 24 hours, the total number of arrests of officers in the case rose to 34. Police said that they have substantial evidence against these officers to prove their involvement in the cash for job scam.
Police said that they are now looking for a few others who had secured the plum jobs by allegedly bribing Paul, who is currently in jail.
The scam was unearthed in 2016 when the Dibrugarh police had caught assistant engineer, Nabakanta Patir, red-handed while accepting bribes from a woman dentist whom he promised a job through the APSC.
The dentist had tipped off police about Patir leading to his arrest.
