India May Join Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Within a Year

India will have to accept 30 documents that have been adopted by the SCO member states in the past 15 years.

  • After holding consultations with top representatives from India for almost a year, India is likely to be given full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) within a year, Secretary-General, Rashid Alimov said on Tuesday.

  • With the signing of a memorandum on the commitments at the Tashkent Summit on 23-24 June, India will move closer to obtaining full SCO membership. India will also have to accept 30 documents that have been adopted by the SCO member states in the past 15 years.

  • India, which has observer status, applied in 2014 for SCO membership, that is expected to allow the country greater access to energy resources in Central Asia and will have more of a say in key security initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region.
