At least 150 Delhi Police personnel are accused of or are being probed over allegations of rape, sexual assault or molestation over the last six years, but there have been no convictions, a Hindustan Times report has found.
According to the report, 122 investigations are still on or the charges have already been filed. There are at least 28 cases in which policemen have been acquitted.
Among the allegations are instances of stalking, inappropriate touching and attempting to have “unnatural sex” with women. Some of these women had come to the police station for aid, the report stated. Three policewomen have also complained of experiencing sexual harassment by their seniors. The information was sought through RTIs filed by the daily.
Responding to the information, Delhi Police spokesperson Dependra Pathak told Hindustan Times that the department has set in motion a gender sensitisation process.
The police force has taken action in 30 percent of the cases by demoting the accused by four years, the newspaper reported. Two constables have also been dismissed in separate cases. These personnel can, however, be reinstated if they win the cases in court, reported Hindustan Times.
